Secret Obsession: Manga

Book Reviews, Life

Back when I was in high school I used to keep the fact that I liked anime/manga a strict secret. Only Sarah and a handful of others knew that I liked it. I made no mention of it outside of the safety of my own house and when someone learned that I was a fan…they tended to be completely shocked. Now, not so much.
Manga was a big part of my life though. I read a lot (probably too much, I mean, I AM a bookworm) and it inspired a lot of my early illustrations and drawings.

My first mangas were Tokyo Mew Mew followed by Card Captor Sakura.
My all-time favorite mangas are:
Fullmetal Alchemist
One Piece
Uzumaki (Spiral) (And everything else by Ito Junji)
Kobato (and basically everything else by CLAMP)
Do you read manga? Do you have any favorites or something you’re currently reading? I’d love to hear about it!

A bookworm since the tender age of whenever I stopped chewing on books and started actually reading them. A cat-mom, graphic designer, and introvert originally from Pittsburgh, but now resides in the humid, hot, state of Texas. Cheers!

  • I kept the fact that I wrote Harry Potter a secret pretty much the whole time I wrote it, which was like four or five years. I thought it was embarrassing because I was rewriting someone else's story when I'm a creative writing student and should be writing my own! But then I realized that I love HP and shouldn't be embarrassed about it!

  • I did more or less the same thing! I didn't hide it per say, but I definitely didn't flaunt it, even though you could tell where I got my inspiration if you looked at my artwork.

  • If anyone saw my scribbles in my notebooks, it was probably obvious! haha!

  • Exactly! Embrace what you love! 🙂

I was definitely not shy about my love for it! My buds and I read manga all the time in study halls. Anime definitely inspired my art as well when I was starting out – my first drawings were of Sailor Moon fanart when I was 11! My favorite mangas were probably Chobits, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Fruits Basket (which was incredibly strange, but hilarious.)

  • I LOVE manga. I don't read it in english any more, but there are some really great translations out there. I loved reading Tramps Like Us, and Flowers Over Boys is probably my ultimate favourite manga.

  • I read some of Fruits Basket, but never finished it! It's a classic though! I love Chobits and Magic Knight Rayearth though! CLAMP is my favorite! 🙂

  • I've never read either of those, I've heard good things about Flowers Over Boys though!
